Looking Up from a Mess Up

Week 2

Psalms 107

I.  The Helpless and Wandering (4-9)

"Some wandered in the desert, lost and homeless."

II. The Rebellious and Disobedient (10-16)

Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom, miserable prisoners in chains. They rebelled against the words of God, scorning the counsel of the Most High. That is why He broke them with hard labor; they fell, and no one helped them rise again. "LORD, help!" they cried in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress. He led them from the darkness and deepest gloom; He snapped their chains. Let them praise the LORD for His great love and for all His wonderful deeds to them. For He broke down their prison gates of bronze; He cut apart their bars of iron.
Psalms 107:10-16

These people are clearly suffering as the CONSEQUENCES of their rebellion.

They have heard God’s Word, but they have rejected it. They have chosen to seek other ways of finding fulfillment in this world.

Now they find themselves PRISONERS in chains.

They have tried to get out, and they can’t!

The design of this affliction is to HUMBLE their HEARTS, To bring them to CONFESS their sin, to accept the punishment, and humbly LOOK UP for mercy and grace.

Prisoners have time to pray!

Once they turn to God; He SETS THEM FREE.

Why is it important to remember our chains?

1. To remain GRATEFUL that God’s grace has released us.

  • That sense of gratitude will be part of our continued growth in Godly character.

2. To give us more COMPASSION for those who are still prisoners and MOTIVTE us to SHARE God’s grace with them.

  • Jesus is the only “key” to unlocking those chains and setting us free.

Why do some Christians still sit in chains?

What prison cell have you grown used too?
